Grunge Design in 2008

How true. There is no one predominant trend in any era: every era is pluralizing. However, one trend may prevail as having been dominant in memories, and it is usually one that stands out. Carson, Beach Culture, Ray Gun, Emigre, T-26 and the like stand out in the 1990s; guys like me doing Bembo revivals didn’t. Hence, grunge will stand out in the consciousness as something tied to that decade, even if it has origins in other eras (remember, Carson started fiddling on his Mac in the 1980s, as did Zuzana Licko and Rudy VanderLans on theirs). We might, in time, forget that Erik Spiekermann’s Meta is very tied to the 1990s as well, just as some (at least before Gary Hustwit’s movie) didn’t really associate Helvetica with the 1950s and 1960s.
Yes agreed. Much like any art history or even world history for that matter - one movement or trend can tend to dominate our memories regardless of origin, evolution, or dissent.
